Varsity Canoe Polo and Marathon 2018 There had been plenty of faff in the lead up to Varsity this year: a tree fell down two days before the event and blocked the marathon course, our polo goals were suffering from a collection of ailments, the most critical being the tendency of one of them to sink, and Cambridge were short of a few ladies to compete at the marathon. But Andy and Jon made short work of the blockage, Andy and Jen scaled trees make a suspended polo goal, and Inese stepped in to complete the ladies team. Bring it on Oxford- Cambridge was ready!

Saturday 17th February saw a convoy of cars containing 19 keen paddlers setting off from the club sheds, for what must surely be one of CUCC’s largest trips to HPP whitewater course (Nottingham). There was a mix of whitewater beginners, a polo player, freestylers, river runners and even a photographer (Dan armed with his gopro-on-a-stick) and a dedicated mostly-bank-based coach (Shahid, sparing his shoulders).
Having trained tirelessly through the cold, the rain and the snow, CUCC approached their first tournament of 2018 with confidence. The latest edition of the regional Division 3 tournament saw Cambridge making the quick trip to Stevenage to play four games against local rivals, including club sides Castle and Nomads, as well as university teams from London (combined colleges) and Surrey.
Friday 24th November saw 11 keen whitewater paddlers and one polo player from CUCC journey northwards, and after long van, car and train trips eventually assemble in a bunkhouse in Teesdale. The previous week had been promisingly rainy but constant monitoring of Rain Chasers revealed that the high levels hadn’t held. The Tees was running though, so there was plenty of kayaking to be done!
The results of the 2017 Varsity Canoe Polo and Marathon are: Mens Marathon: 23 - 22 (Cambridge Win) Womens Marathon: 21 - 24 (Oxford Win) Mens Polo: 3 - 2 (Cambridge Win) Womens Polo: 5 - 2 (Cambridge Win) Full report to follow.
