Varsity 2018

Varsity Canoe Polo and Marathon 2018 There had been plenty of faff in the lead up to Varsity this year: a tree fell down two days before the event and blocked the marathon course, our polo goals were suffering from a collection of ailments, the most critical being the tendency of one of them to sink, and Cambridge were short of a few ladies to compete at the marathon. But Andy and Jon made short work of the blockage, Andy and Jen scaled trees make a suspended polo goal, and Inese stepped in to complete the ladies team. Bring it on Oxford- Cambridge was ready!

The marathon start
The Varsity marathon races took place over a four-mile course running between the town centre and Grantchester, with the results decided by the aggregated scores of the first three finishers from each university in each race. The men’s race ran first and was well contested with five paddlers from each of Cambridge and Oxford. Victory was taken by Sam Plummer for Cambridge, showing his considerable experience, though the team was unable to follow his example with three capsizes (and a marauding swan) killing off their chances of victory.

Freestyle
Last weekend we had our annual Varsity competition against Oxford University Canoe and Kayak Club. Sadly it was an overall loss for Cambridge. However, every event was closely fought so a massive congratulations to everyone that took part. We did manage to triumph over the dark blues in some events with both the Men's Polo and Men's Freestyle teams recording wins. Final congratulations go to individuals who got top 3 finishes - Shahid Wahab for 2nd in Freestyle and to Alex Ross for 3rd in both Freestyle and Marathon. A full report will be written up soon.
